90+ New Restaurants, Cafes and Bars in Singapore [September 2020]

If the marketing mantra of times past was 'location, location, location', it has changed almost overnight to 'delivery, delivery, delivery' as F&B operators have signed up in droves to online ordering sites.

This has resulted in many brands re-inventing themselves, often on-the-fly.

We've seen virtual pop-up brands, such as Miss Vanda by Labrynth, co-exist for a limited period of time alongside their bricks-and-mortar restaurant.

There's been re-invention to cater for changing habits; Forlino Restaurant has become Riveria Forlino, while Yoshi established a sub-brand, Nozomi by Yoshi, to re-pitch it's offering towards delivery and takeaway customers.

Sushi Express has done something similar with its new Magic Touch brand.

For bars and drinking establishments, expanding the food menu has been an imperative. Capital by Zouk set up Capital Kitchen, while Ce La Vi has shifted gears with its Baos by Ce La Vi menu.

Others have set up solo online brands, like Grammi by Chef Beppi and Flourfields. Online patisseries might not be new, but the pandemic has given such businesses a short in the arm.

Kitchens on Clould Nine
The recent Supreme Court decision, effectively in favour of Smart City Kitchens, called on delivery service companies such as Deliveroo and Foodpanda, to accept orders placed via cloud kitchens.

Many brands, big and small, have bought into the idea of a cloud kitchen, such as An Acai Affair and MOS Cafe, which focus primarily on delivery and self-collection. This is only likely to accelerate off the back of the court judgement.

Smart City Kitchens recently opened their fifth clould kitchen at Orchard Towers alongside Orchard Food Market, which offers a limited dine-in space.

We've also seen the entry of delivery-only brands like GoPizza and Burrata Joy.

Restaurant Dining at Home
We have a well-established culture of eating out rather than cooking at home. The pandemic has shown us we can now get the best of both worlds - staying at home and still not cooking.

Restaurant-quality dining at home is a trend that seems to have ticked all the boxes; good food, supermarket-priced beverages and chilling out with family and friends in your own time at home has scratched a proverbial itch.

As the old proverb says, necessity is the mother of invention - and the circuit breaker has given us an insight into what is possible, from all sides of the table.

What's new
New players with a first outlet on the block during August 2020, which are highlighted with a [NEW] prefix in the listing below, include Wagyu Bites by Aburiya, Soi Candy and Butter Bean, from the BreadTalk Group.

There's also new outlets from Galare Cafe, Fluff Stack and Ippudo.

Our personal favourite, though, is Durian Lab Cafe by Ah Seng; it's always great to see local hawker move up a gear.
